01 Salary Overview

Salary Overview

Most UI/UX Designer job listings in India skip the salary band entirely. Of the 29 active openings tracked by knok jobradar in July 2026, none published a pay range. That is the norm in the Indian market, not an exception.

This makes research harder but not impossible. Glassdoor, LinkedIn Salary, and levels.fyi all collect self-reported data from designers across India. The ranges they publish are not official, but they reflect real offers accepted by real people. Publicly reported data and industry surveys consistently show that salary for a UI/UX Designer in India varies enormously based on four things: years of experience, city, company type, and portfolio strength.

This guide explains what each of those factors means in practice, so you can walk into salary conversations with a number grounded in data, not guesswork.

02 By Experience Level

By Experience Level

Because none of the 29 openings in our current snapshot disclosed a salary band, the figures below come from publicly reported aggregator data and industry surveys.

Fresh or early-career (0-2 years). Glassdoor commonly cites the lowest ranges at this level. Most early-career designers start at agencies, IT services companies, or small product teams. Portfolio quality matters even here: a well-documented case study can shift an offer meaningfully compared to a bare resume.

Mid-level (2-5 years). Industry surveys consistently show this as the biggest jump in the career curve, especially for designers who move from a services firm to a product startup or MNC product team. Demonstrated ownership over shipped features, not just pixel delivery, is what drives the increase.

Senior level (5-8 years). Publicly reported data on Glassdoor and levels.fyi shows senior designers at product companies earning significantly above the overall market median for the role. At this stage, interviewers evaluate your ability to influence product direction and mentor junior designers, not just your visual craft.

Lead or principal (8+ years). Levels.fyi commonly cites this bracket as the highest-variance tier. The same title pays very differently at a legacy IT services firm versus a well-funded product startup or a global MNC. ESOP and RSU value can become as large as base salary at this level.

Honest caveat. These tiers reflect aggregator data, not the 29 specific listings in our snapshot. Use them as a starting point for your own research rather than as precise benchmarks.

03 By City

By City

Here is how the 29 active UI/UX Designer openings break down by city, from the July 2026 snapshot:

CityOpen Roles
Delhi8
Bangalore6
Mumbai4
Hyderabad1
Pune1
Chennai0

Delhi leads the count with 8 openings, driven by large consulting firms, government-adjacent digital projects, and enterprises headquartered in the NCR region. Bangalore follows with 6, reflecting its deep product-company ecosystem. Mumbai's 4 openings skew toward fintech and media businesses.

On pay by city, Glassdoor commonly cites Bangalore as offering higher compensation for the same experience level than most other Indian metros, because product-first tech companies cluster there. Hyderabad shows a similar pattern in industry surveys. Delhi and Mumbai are not far behind for senior roles at MNCs, but service-sector employers in those cities tend to pay closer to the national median.

Hyderabad and Pune showing just one listing each, and Chennai showing none, does not mean those cities have no hiring activity. Many companies post on LinkedIn or their own career pages without syndicating to the aggregators we track. If you are targeting these cities, check company career pages directly in addition to standard job portals.

04 Negotiation Tips

Negotiation Tips

Research before the call, not during it. Look up your title on Glassdoor and LinkedIn Salary filtered by city and experience level. Write down a realistic high-end figure before you speak to any recruiter. That number is your opening ask, not your compromise.

Let them say a number first. When a recruiter asks your salary expectation early in the process, it is acceptable to redirect: 'Can you share the band budgeted for this role? I want to make sure we are aligned on scope before committing to a number.' Many recruiters will share it.

Counter with market data, not personal need. A response like 'Glassdoor shows this role paying in a certain range in Bangalore, and I am targeting the higher end given my experience' is stronger than citing rent or loans. Market arguments are easier for recruiters to take back to the hiring manager.

Read the full offer before accepting. Base salary is one line in a long document. Check the variable pay structure, PF contribution split, how ESOP vesting works, and whether any joining bonus carries a retention clause. A joining bonus that must be repaid if you leave before a set period is a liability, not a gift.

Do not accept on the call. Ask for the written offer, take time to read it carefully, then confirm. Verbal offers sometimes change. Written offers are the real thing.

Negotiate benefits when base is fixed. If the company says their salary band is firm, push on remote-work days, the performance review cycle, or a faster first appraisal. Employers often have more flexibility on these than on headline CTC.

05 Total Comp Breakdown

Total Comp Breakdown

Indian job offers are quoted as CTC (Cost to Company). CTC is not your take-home. Understanding the components helps you compare offers accurately and avoid a surprise on your first paycheck.

Fixed base salary. The core monthly amount before deductions. This is the number to anchor your comparisons on when evaluating multiple offers.

Variable or performance pay. Paid quarterly or annually, conditional on individual and company performance targets. You may not receive the full stated amount in any given cycle. Check whether the variable component is 'at target' or 'maximum': the realistic payout is often lower than the ceiling figure in the offer letter.

Provident Fund (PF). A statutory contribution split between employer and employee. The employer portion is counted inside your CTC, but you also contribute from your salary each month, which reduces your actual in-hand amount.

HRA and allowances. House Rent Allowance, telephone allowance, and similar components sit inside CTC. Some portions reduce your tax liability if claimed correctly. A tax calculator or a conversation with a CA is useful once you have an offer in hand.

Gratuity. A statutory benefit that accrues over years of continuous service. Employers include it in CTC projections, but you only receive it after completing the qualifying service period.

ESOP or RSU. At startups and listed tech companies, stock can form a meaningful part of total comp. RSUs at a listed company are closer to cash once vested. ESOPs at early-stage startups carry real uncertainty: value depends on a liquidity event that may or may not materialise on any predictable schedule.

Bottom line. Always ask the recruiter for a CTC breakup. Knowing exactly what is fixed, what is variable, and what is statutory will stop you from being surprised by a lower-than-expected first bank transfer.

Q Questions

Frequently asked

Why do most UI/UX Designer jobs in India not show a salary?

Keeping salary off listings is standard practice for most Indian employers. It gives them flexibility to negotiate based on each candidate's current pay and expectations, and avoids anchoring existing employees who might see the posting. The best approach is to ask the recruiter directly after the first screening call, framing it as a question about their budget rather than your demand.

Where can I find reliable salary data for UI/UX Designers in India?

Glassdoor and LinkedIn Salary are the most accessible starting points. Filter by city and experience level to get a relevant range rather than a national average. Levels.fyi is useful if you are targeting product companies or funded startups specifically. Cross-referencing two or three sources gives you a more reliable picture than trusting any single figure, since all these platforms rely on self-reported data with varying sample sizes.

Do product companies really pay more than IT services firms for UI/UX roles?

Yes, publicly reported data and industry surveys consistently show a gap in favour of product companies for the same years of experience. The trade-off is that services firms often offer more job stability, structured appraisals, and clearer promotion timelines. If maximising total compensation is the priority, product companies and MNC product teams are the better target, though their hiring process is also more selective.

What is the difference between CTC and in-hand salary for a designer?

CTC is the total the employer counts as your package, including employer-side statutory contributions and benefits you do not see monthly. In-hand is what actually reaches your bank account after deductions for PF, professional tax, and income tax. HR professionals commonly cite the gap as significant enough to matter when comparing offers, especially when one offer has a larger variable component or higher stock allocation than another.

Does a strong portfolio actually change the salary offer?

For UI/UX specifically, yes, more than in most other tech roles. A designer who can show detailed case studies with real product decisions, user research findings, and shipped features can often negotiate at a higher level than their years of experience alone would suggest. The portfolio is what gets you shortlisted and sets the tone for the salary discussion, so investing time in it has a direct financial return.

How do I keep up with UI/UX Designer openings without checking a dozen job sites every day?

Manually tracking listings across multiple portals is time-consuming, and many openings close faster than a weekly check can catch. Knok checks 150+ job sites nightly, applies to roles that match your resume, and messages HR on your behalf so you do not miss active openings. It is built for Indian job seekers and costs around ₹2,500 a month.
